ABOUT THE BUILDING
This beautiful, Romanesque gray stone structure is named after the Greek muse of comedy.
Designated as a very significant landmark, by Chicago Landmark's Commission in 1989. After a period of decay it is finally positioned to reclaim the glory and respect it enjoyed back in 1892 - 93 during a period of wonder, inventions, commercialization of electricity, as the entire world watched Chicago being the shining star hosting the entire world to new and endless possibilities ofa better life.
Three components make up this wonderful building known as Thalia Hall:
1. A residential component converted to 8 large units from its original 21 units due to city code issues.
2. Commercial component with 5 retail stores, two of which have been lovingly restored to makeway for Ristorante Al Teatro. Every detail of the restaurant reconstruction from the tin ceiling, dark wood bars with granite tops, gelato bar and pizza bar to the rustic wine cellar was designed & built by its owner, Dominick Geraci, with the help of a talented artist, David Bozic. They created a theme restaurant paying homage to the Chicago World Columbian Exposition in 1893 and true to the historical significance of the building affectionately known as Thalia Hall.
3. Thalia Hall Theater. The theatre iss the last component which was in desperate need of renovation. It was the center of social life for Czecks at the turn of the century where live theatre performances took place in their own native language. Social dances, loves were declared and weddings were celebrated. In the early 1900's, film became popular and the first films were projected at Thalia Hall.
Thalia Hall Theater was modeled after the Opera House in Prague, which burned down approximately in 1850, making Thalia Hall the only existing replica.
The name "Pilsen" derived from the Czeck city of Pilzen. Besides the Thalia Hall Building, along 18th Street, you can admire the buildings turret's and cornices which is typical of Czech architecture at the turn of the century, with an occasional date on top of the buildings proclaiming the year they were built.
